Who & Why
Sponsorship isn't something we take lightly. As a small business we don't have deep pockets, but we also like to share and help others. We would like to see others reach their goals, just as we would like to reach our own goals in hiking. When we decided to offer to sponsor our first athlete, for me it was personal. Mike is not only a friend of mine, but more than that he does trips I can only dream of. I know I won't do trips like he does. It is not in my personality to do what he does. Yet, I would love nothing more than to see and help him accomplish what he wants in life.
Every little bit helps, be it help with logistics, trips or afterwards. Attaining your goals isn't easy!

Mike overlooking Power Creek in SE Alaska's Coastal Chugach Range, July 2006:

I met Mike in 2003 thru the forums on Backpacker.com. He joined a number of us on a trip into the Olympic Mountains here in Washington State, and from there it was friendship. Mike is in his 20's, married to his wife, Traci and has a son, Tommy. They currently live in Colorado.
Mike is out constantly, but has done some very memorable trips, listed here.
Mike's website is Rainforest Treks, where as he has time he is working on getting his tales up. He recently finished doing a16 day solo circumnavigation of the Yakutat Peninsula, traversing Russell Fjord & the Hubbard Glacier. This was in Tongass NF, Russell Fjord Wilderness in Yakutat, AK. He used his UL raft to paddle quite a bit of it. When Mike left for this trip his pack was 70+ lbs, of which over 30 lbs was food. He goes by UL for hiking, but on the long trips no matter what you do, you will have weight-from your food!
Mike sent me a
couple photos today of some of his meals on the trip. He overhauled his
way of eating, using recipes from us.
His food for the recent trip was about 32 lbs, which was very good for
the amount of food he needed to consume on his trip.

It is good to have Mike back safely once again. We cannot wait to see where he decides to go next!
